Elements of Serenity: #3 Wings of Reflection - A Journey into Japanese Inspired Art

Updated: 15 hours ago

Maybe its the delicate unfurling of a blossom, or the light at dawn as it filters through the branches or an ancient tree, or the glimpse of a deer locking eyes with you that reminds you of life’s simple, profound beauty?

Imagine stepping off a branch and knowing that the air, not the earth will hold you and that your feathers and wings will work in harmony with wind, thermals and air flow that you can feel but cannot see? It is often birds in Japanese Art that capture the mysterious beauty of life.

Emulating Japanese art with a deep bow to it's elegance and profound simplicity. Birds are often depicted in moments of quiet repose or graceful movement, embodying a certain reverence for life.

They remind us to notice the delicate balance in nature, the fleeting yet enduring beauty of a single feather, or the silent strength of a solitary presence.

For anyone who finds solace in the rustle of leaves or the song of a distant bird, my bird art offers a gateway to that same serenity.

In my paintings, you can hold a fleeting moment. The turn of a head, a sweet song, the stretch of wing, so brief, so special and yet kindly captured like a nostalgic memory just for you.

Art that suits your home, yes and so much more.

Ancient Wisdom for a Modern World

My art is inspired by Japanese philosophy of wabi sabi.

Wabi, implying stillness, rising above the mundane, beauty found in simplicity.

Sabi, suggests patina, aged or antique, tranquillity and hidden depth.

Together they reflect a response to profound beauty, a natural beauty, transient and perfectly imperfect.

Gentle Karma

Woodblock printing was introduced to Japan to produce Buddhist texts. Later, during the Edo period (1603-1868), publishers used woodblock printing for scale to produce literature and art to the increasingly well-educated population.

Woodblock prints have a graphic detailed quality and yet remain delicate and ethereal. I feel that elements of detail work well with atmospheric semi-abstract backgrounds of texture to bring intrigue and exploration into my work.
