Elements of Serenity: #2 Calm Canvas & Peace in Abstract Forms

One of the reasons that landscape paintings and abstract art are so popular is their ability to evoke emotions.

Landscapes offer a connection to nature and provide a sense of calm and nostalgia. Abstracts allow for your personal interpretation and have an ability to compliment home interiors to create the right mood for your life.

For me, the sweet spot is in bringing these two forms together in my semi-abstract nature neutral textured nature paintings.

My studio window sill houses collections of pine cones, interesting pebbles and seashells. Interesting textured items that bring nature inside an encourage openness and curiosity.

And it's from this place of connection that I paint. Neutral semi-abstracts emerging from the quiet contemplation of form, texture, and the subtle shifts in nature’s palette. They are an invitation to pause, to look closer, and to find your own story within their gentle layers.

In a busy world, sometimes the most profound statements are made in hushed tones, allowing space for personal reflection and an unhurried appreciation of beauty.

Art that decorates, yes and so much more.

Ancient Wisdom for a Modern World

My art is inspired by Japanese philosophy of wabi sabi.

Wabi, implying stillness, rising above the mundane, beauty found in simplicity.

Sabi, suggests patina, aged or antique, tranquillity and hidden depth.

Together they reflect a response to profound beauty, a natural beauty, transient and perfectly imperfect.

Following in Pioneering Footsteps

The first abstract painting was created in the early 20th Century, probably by Hilma of Klint though contested by Kandinsky, Mondrian and others.

Over one hundred years later we continue to investigate forces in the universe, in nature and in humanity that we cannot see but know or sense. Science continues to progress and art seeks to represent that which cannot be fully seen. Abstraction offers an incredible tool to the artist and art lover alike to examine this with curiosity.

Reflecting Natural Beauty at Home

Picture running your fingers over a weathered piece of driftwood, breathing in an ethereal foggy morning or the whispered lullaby of grasses blowing in the wind in your life and home.

My neutral textured paintings are created in layers, intended both to hide and reveal, to create depth and encourage curiosity. They are more than just art; they are an invitation to live your perfectly imperfect live in the best way that you can.

Are you drawn to the patina of perfectly imperfect art?
